Frequently Asked Questions

What services do you offer?

We give good natured adults tools to make themselves better by passing along the Ving Tsun (wing chun) close-quarters self defense system, as it was passed to us. We create opportunities outside class times to train, travel and participate in “kung fu life”. We help with private instruction, demos and self-defense workshops when appropriate.

How do I get started?

Getting started is simple. Reach out through our contact form or social media, give us a call, or send us an email—we’ll walk you through the next steps and answer any questions you may have. We want the process to be as easy as possible for you to get started.

What makes you different?

What makes us different from other martial arts? We haven’t trained them all, but safe to say Ving Tsun generally distinguishes itself by being a close-quarters-contact-first self defense system. You touch hands and deal with fighting distance on day one. Another notable difference is our fanatical adherence to core principles, like centerline, sticking and forward energy. In our kung fu family, we also tend to focus on a heavy yet mobile horse (stance) and hitting hard.

Do I have to be in shape or be familiar with martial arts training?

No. Our approach is accessible to most adults in reasonably good health and no martial arts experience is required. New students have a healthy “on ramp” to the system and everyone advances at their own pace. The environment is relaxed and supportive with a focus on safety, That said, training is not easy. It is challenging both physically and mentally at times. As always, we recommend that people come try a week of training (for free) and see if it’s right for them.

What about women?

Frankly, we hate that more women aren’t training martial arts, universally, regardless of whatever “style”. We are heavily invested in making sure our training environment is welcoming and safe for everyone who trains, including women.

The system we train is very appropriate for women. Legend says that the system was made by a woman for a woman. There are some women who have found great success training the system. And, there are numerous real-world examples of women using the system to defend themselves against criminal assaults, some involving multiple attackers.

If you are a women considering training, give it a try! Don’t let fear, stereotypes or gender roles decide for you. Try it and decide for yourself. We promise to do our part. We want you to succeed!

What is Ving Tsun?

Ving Tsun (often spelled wing chun) is a self defense system that was developed in southeastern China at the end of the Ming dynasty. It (the system) has surely evolved since then, but at it’s core, as we interpret it, the system is a close quarters self defense system base heavily on striking and a strong maneuverable horse (stance). It is said that the system was created to be effective against larger or more numerous opponents, and experience has shown us that it is.
